Memorable Americas Tries – Santiago Gibernau vs Romania 2014

Romania hosted the 2014 Nations Cup. The tournament featured three test teams and Emerging Ireland. Uruguay finished with a 1-2 record with a win over Russia and defeats against Emerging Ireland and Romania.

Uruguay put in a solid effort against the hosts. Romania were 34-16 winners in Bucharest, scoring three tries to one. Scoring for Los Teros was winger Santiago Gibernau.

The try came from a counter attack. Fullback Gastón Mieres got past Florin Ionita and Gabriel Conache before stepping inside to defeat Florin Surugiu. His run was not over yet as he also found a way past Marius Sirbe. When tackled he offloaded to Gibernau who touched down under the posts.

Gilbernau played 37 caps in total, his final one also coming against Romania. He had three starts in RWC 2015. Mieres also played in RWC 2015 as well as in RWC 2019. He currently has 70 caps to his name. He plays for the Toronto Arrows in Major League Rugby.
