Evan Olmstead has signed a permanent contract with Biarritz Olympique that will see him stay in the Basque region of France at least until the end of the 2021-2022 season. The Canadian international has been a starting lock for the Pro D2 club since signing as a medical joker in October.
Biarritz is the third European club for Olmstead. The 28-year-old had a short stay with London Scottish in 2016 before joining Newcastle Falcons in the English Premiership on a two-year deal. After helping Auckland lift the 2018 Mitre 10 Cup he returned to Newcastle ahead of Rugby World Cup 2019.
France is now home to all of Canada’s European professionals. Tyler Ardron and Shane O’Leary are departing New Zealand and England respectively to join Olmstead, Matt Tierney, Matt Beukeboom, and Taylor Paris. Capped scrumhalf Will Percillier is among a handful of age grade stars on academy deals.
