Memorable Americas Tries – Argentina vs Australia 1983-2018

Argentina’s introduction into the Rugby Championship in 2012 has brought two annual matches against Australia. This has changed the shape of international competition between the countries for players and supporters alike.

Since joining the competition, Argentina have touched down for memorable tries. Two of them are captured in the following video. The video contains a total of five tries, three of which are from the amateur era and showcase scores from classic victories.

The first two tries came in Brisbane, Australia in 1983. They were pushover tries scored by Tomás Petersen and Buenaventura Mínguez. Los Pumas were winners on that famous day as so they were in 1987 at home. On that occasion Cristian Mendy went over for the decisive score in Buenos Aires.

Tries four and five on the video are recent. Both came in 2018, though not in the same match. Bautista Delguy went over for a two phase score from a lineout in Argentina’s own 22. It saw Pablo Matera breaking before the young winger used his pace and stepping to complete the finish.

The final try is the one defeat among the matches on the video. It was scored by replacement fly half Santiago González Iglesias. The match took place in Salta and saw an unforgettable comeback performance from the Wallabies to silence Los Pumas.
