Pietersen intends to continue playing for San Diego Legion

Joe Pietersen says he intends to continue on playing in Major League Rugby for as long as he is physically able. The Legion’s captain is currently residing near Durban for now to be with family during the COVID-19 pandemic, but told South African site Rugby Rocks that a return to San Diego is on the cards.

Fast approaching his 36th birthday, Pietersen is one of the oldest players in MLR but remains among the league’s elite players. He led San Diego to a Championship Final appearance in 2019 as a flyhalf and looked in top form at his preferred fullback spot for the undefeated Legion in 2020.

The Springbok Sevens international began his professional career in 2005 with Western Province. Two stints in France and one season in Japan preceded his move to the USA. Since arriving in San Diego at the end of the inaugural 2018 campaign, Pietersen has played 20 games for the Legion, scoring 189 points with a remarkable 87% goal kicking accuracy.
