Gary Gold backs Pichot for World Rugby Chairman

Gary Gold is backing Agustín Pichot not Sir Bill Beaumont. The Head Coach of the USA Eagles confirmed on twitter that he favors the Argentine for the role of World Rugby Chairman.

“(I) really enjoy the pragmatic, sensible approach taken by @AP9_ (Agustín Pichot). This is not campaigning, this has always been his view to get the game back in shape. Gus is a strong leader who is not afraid to make tough calls. Big opportunity for “rugby” to make the right call.”

Gold’s support for Pichot is noteworthy. It clarifies who the USA Eagles Head Coach would like in charge of World Rugby. It also happens to be the opposite of what has been projected. Sources have indicated that USA Rugby is expected to favor Beaumont due to the union being bankrupt.

In an effort to confirm the union’s position Americas Rugby News has contacted USA Rugby. Contact has also been made with Rugby Canada. They have been in contact with both candidates, although the preferred candidate of both is not publicly known. Both are to discuss the options internally next week.

Considering the strong relations between both North American unions and the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) and Súdamerica Rugby, backing Pichot makes more sense in 2020 than Beaumont. The RWC 2015-2019 cycle saw the highly successful  Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) played annually. Additional initiatives include regional inclusion for the junior game.
