Proposal to play Super Rugby and Rugby Championship Simultaneously

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, SANZAAR President Andy Marinos has made a proposal to play Super Rugby and the Rugby Championship simultaneously.

The 2020 Super Rugby season has been disrupted and there is no possibility of the season resuming to be completed on schedule. As such an alternative is required. Marinos believes that playing the two SANZAAR competitions at the same time is viable. He commented:

“Could you be playing the Rugby Championship at the same time as a domestic competition?”

“It’s not trying to rubbish one for the other, it’s how do we get a sensible solution in what may be a restricted time frame?”

Ideas have been put forward of playing the conferences individually, without travel. This would mean the all matches of the New Zealand conference occur between the five franchises while the Sunwolves would play exclusively in Australia and Los Jaguares in South Africa.

If the Rugby Championship and Super Rugby are to take place simultaneously then there will be changes to the make-up of both teams. On the one hand it likely means that players from Los Ceibos would be drafted into Los Jaguares. On the other hand it means that Pumas captain Pablo Matera would be joined by more than just a handful of names who play in Europe.
