In his rookie season of test match rugby, Manuel Montero was a break-out star. He debuted with a try against Uruguay before scoring a hat-trick against Chile and one against Brazil. The three tests were in May 2012 for teams comparable to the Argentina XV by contemporary standards.
In June La Pantera was in Los Pumas. The South Americans played their home June Internationals against Italy and France without their European-based players who would feature in the Rugby Championship. This was an opportunity for many, including Montero.
The then 20-year-old scored the match-winning try over France in Córdoba. The score was a counter-attacking try. Montero finished it off by chasing and gathering a kick from Joaquín Tuculet. He gathered the ball from the bounce and got past two Frenchmen to score. Felipe Contepomi converted from near the sideline to seal a 23-20 victory.
