Christian Ostberg to leave Aurillac at season’s end

Aurillac have confirmed that American lock or blindside flanker Christian Ostberg will be leaving the club at the end of the French Pro D2 season. The 25-year-old is coming to the end of a three-year contract extension signed in 2017, having originally joined the Cantalians in 2015.

Injuries have blighted Ostberg’s career and limited his appearances with Aurillac to just 19 league games and two starts. He suffered a serious hamstring injury in December 2017, with a misdiagnosis delaying surgical repair until early 2019. Ostberg returned to the pitch in November and has played twice since before the season was suspended.

Having represented the USA at u20 level in the 2013 Junior World Championship, Ostberg earned senior ‘A’ honors in the 2016 Americas Pacific Challenge. Fitness permitting, the Round Rock, Texas, native should be in high demand from Major League Rugby sides. The Austin Gilgronis could top the list of Ostberg’s potential destinations for 2021.
