Canada began RWC 1991 against Fiji in Bayonne. The match is arguably Canada’s greatest achieved in a RWC thus far. The North Americans were 13-3 winners and followed it up with a 19-11 win over Romania in Toulouse. Canada’s final pool match was against France in Agen and it was followed by a Quarter Final against New Zealand in Lille. Indeed, Canada played all matches in France despite it being England 1991.
Involved in all four of Canada’s RWC 1991 matches was Scott Stewart. He earned four of his 64 test caps in the tournament. His lengthily career saw him playing in three different decades with his debut being in 1989 and his final cap in 2001.
Stewart would go on to also play in RWCs 1995 and 1999, yet his defining moment was his try against Fiji in Bayonne. It came from Canada gaining possession from a Fijian lineout. Center Christian Stewart broke the line and off-loaded to flanker Gord MacKinnon.
From the following phase Canada went left. Hooker David Spiers combined with winger Steve Gray who got past Noa Nadruku before passing to Scott Stewart. The fullback stepped to get his way to and over the line, avoiding Waisale Serevi and Fili Seru.
