Memorable Americas Tries – Felipe Contepomi vs South Africa 2003

Argentine legend and World Rugby Hall of Famer scored 16 test tries in his career of 87 caps. There were many memorable tries and today we look at one of them. It was scored against South Africa in a RWC 2003 warm-up match in Port Elizabeth.

The try was a counter-attacking play. It came in response to a break from Louis Koen. The fly half linked with his captain, Corné Krige who lost the ball. From there Argentine winger José Núñez Piossek broke out, doing so from 10 meters out from his own try line.

The Tucumán express ran before passing to Nicolás Fernández Miranda who found Argentina’s other winger, Diego Albanese. Continued attack then saw fullback Juan Martín Hernández and center José Orengo involved as well as Rimas Álvarez Kairelis who was brought to ground.

Quick play followed with fly half Gonzalo Quesada passing to Felipe Contepomi who broke a tackle from Cobus Visagie and had the help of Álvarez Kairellis and Hernández to beat a second defender as Stefan Terblanche was unable to stop the rampaging Contepomi who scored.
