Sevens Series postponed, u20 Championship cancelled

World Rugby have confirmed that the remainder of the World Sevens Series has been postponed. FFR President Bernard Laporte had announced earlier this week that the Paris Sevens was off. The European leg in its entirety has now been tentatively moved to September with London also called off, with the women’s event in Langford also postponed.

While the Olympic qualifying event set to take place in Chile in June is ‘under review’, it appears highly unlikely to take place. No Sevens Series events are now scheduled prior to the Tokyo Olympics in the event it goes ahead planned in late July.

Meanwhile the World Rugby u20 Championship scheduled to take place in Italy has been cancelled in its entirety. The second-tier World Rugby u20 Trophy scheduled for Spain in September remains unaffected though with qualifying events under question it may yet suffer the same fate.

Some qualifying events for the 2021 and 2023 Rugby World Cups have also been postponed, though the official World Rugby statement did not directly identify them. It remains to be seen if the July test window can be salvaged with international travel brought to a halt amidst the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
