The 2015 edition of the South American Rugby Championship was the last of its kind. The following year saw the birth of the Americas Rugby Championship, and with it a new structure altogether. It has led to professional rugby in six new countries, a marked change from 2015 when only Argentina had a professional team in the Americas.
The 2015 South American Rugby Championship included promotion and relegation. It was a tournament spread participants, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay each hosting matches.
The tournament had the added excitement of Uruguay competing in it. With it being played in May, it was just five months before Los Teros made their long-awaited return to a Rugby World Cup tournament.
It was not smooth sailing for Uruguay, though as Chile upset Los Teros to win the tournament. It was Chile’s inaugural victory in the tournament. As remarkable as that was, Chile were pushed one week earlier by Paraguay in Asunción.
