Eagles into LA Quarters Finals, Isles and Baker hit 200

The USA have qualified for the Cup Quarter Finals of the Los Angeles Sevens, the only one of three Americas entries to do so. Canada and Argentina with both play in the consolation 9th place bracket after winning once each on Day One.

It was two from three for the Eagles. Samoa were first up and they were not easy, taking a lead until an historic moment in the second half. Carlin Isles raced away for his 200th career World Sevens Series try, with the conversion from Madison Hughes clinching the 19-17 victory.

Perry Baker waited until the last minute of the second game to get his 200th. Four others had already scored tries when Baker crossed in the 33-12 win over Scotland. Australia outscored them three tries to one in the third match but the USA finished 2nd in Pool C.

Canada’s roster was revitalised but not quite connected as they fell to Ireland in their first match. The second was largely one-way traffic as South Africa scored five tries to Canada’s one. A Justin Douglas hat trick more than did the trick in the third match, a shutout win over Kenya.

Argentina gave up two late tries to France, finishing level with Les Bleus to start Pool A. They would breeze past South Korea with Rodrigo Isgro scoring twice. Los Pumas were on the flipside of a similar scoreline against Fiji in their last match of the day.

The Olympic champions were in fine form on Day One though France gave Fiji a scare. New Zealand went unbeaten in Pool D, where Spain scored an impressive upset win over England. The Blitzboks topped Pool B despite drawing with Ireland.

Day Two will begin with Los Pumas facing Wales in the first 9th place Quarter Final. Three matches later Canada will square off against Scotland. All eyes will be on the Eagles as they face the mighty South Africans in the last Cup Quarter Final.

All matches will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Gold. Those in Canada can watch on the CBC Sports website, with ESPN broadcasting in Latin and South America.
