Conor Trainor departs Nevers, joins Canada 7s

Conor Trainor has been released from his contract with Pro D2 club USO Nevers by mutual consent to pursue a spot on Canada’s Men’s Sevens team for the Olympic Games. The 30-year-old has been included in Canada’s roster for the upcoming Los Angeles event on the World Sevens Series.

The return to the shortened code comes nearly four years after Trainor took up his first contract in France with Vannes in 2016. After one season he moved to Nevers, where the midfielder has been a regular since recuperating from a serious Achilles injury suffered while on international duty in 2017.

Trainor played in 40 tournaments on the Sevens circuit before opting for the European move after Canada failed to make the 2016 Olympics. He recently appeared in his third Rugby World Cup with Canada, winning his 36th test cap against South Africa.

Henry Paul has made two changes to the that finished 10th in Sydney. Andrew Coe and Josiah Morra drop out with Justin Douglas returning from injury to join Trainor in his return to the squad. It’s the first tournament of the season for Douglas.

Canada are currently in 10th spot overall on the Sevens Series. They have been drawn in Pool B for Los Angeles along with Ireland, South Africa, and Kenya. The two-day event kicks off on February 29th.
