The full extent of the spending spree by the Austin Gilgronis is only now coming into focus. Set to follow newly-arrived Jamie Mackintosh to the club is former Australia u20 captain Maclean Jones, the fifth overseas addition since last month’s surprise re-branding.
Jones, 23, is known as a tough-tackling openside flanker who is also comfortable at No8, where he lined up for the Junior Wallabies. He has been a regular starter in each of the past five National Rugby Championship tournaments and has been contracted to both the Reds and Waratahs of Super Rugby though he has just one appearance in the competition to date.
Upon arrival he will join Tonga flyhalf Kurt Morath, Wallabies back Adam Ashley-Cooper, and a to-be-named scrumhalf in Austin. Previous signings still to receive visa clearance include Tonga lock Dan Faleafa and former All Blacks winger Frank Halai.
Other notable additions still to appear for the club this season due to injury are Brazilian front rower Wilton Rebolo, South African flanker Michael de Waal, and former Eagles center Roland Suniula. Recently added as cover are Austin Blacks front row and MLR veteran Brendan Rams, second row pair JP Novak and Erik Jacobsen, and Austin Huns flyhalf Alex Rees.
