Former Utah scrumhalf Johnny Ika signs for Selknam

Former Utah Warriors scrumhalf Johnny Ika is headed to Chile. The 27-year-old Tonga ‘A’ representative has signed with Selknam for the inaugural Súper Liga Americana de Rugby season. He arrives from Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand where he was on the extended Magpies roster.

Ika was used primarily in the No9 shirt for the Warriors in 2019 but is also an experienced fullback. He has played both positions in the Americas Pacific Challenge and also in New Zealand provincial rugby. When not training with the Magpies during the Mitre 10 Cup he played on loan for King Country.

Selknam now have three scrumhalves on their roster including Argentina XV cap Patricio Baronio and Cóndores incumbent starter Beltrán Vergara. It could see Ika used more at fullback though Chile internationals Christian Huerta and Francisco Urroz are also set to join.
