Chile’s first professional rugby team, Selknam has recruited two Pacific Islanders. Just over one month out from the opening round of the inaugural Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR), Selknam have confirmed the arrival of Fijian and Tongan international players.
27-year-old Latiume Fosita is a utility back. The Tonga u20s and Tonga RWC 2015 and 2019 representative can play fly half, center or wing. He is known to followers of South American rugby due to him having been a replacement for Tonga against Argentina in the RWC 2019 pool match in Osaka; and against Argentina in the RWC 2015 pool match in Leicester.
In addition to his international experience playing for Tonga, Fosita has also played professional rugby in different parts of the world. He has played for New Zealand sides Northland, Counties-Manukau and Auckland in the Mitre 10 Cup; and for the Doncaster Knights in the UK.
Also joining Selknam is Fijian prop Vesi Rarawa. The 34-year-old has one cap to his name from an away match against Italy in 2010. He joins from Duavata Rugby Club.
The two men join five Argentine players at Selknam – Rodrigo Bruno, Patricio Baronio, Bautista Estavile, Ignacio Albornoz, and Esteban Viale. The team will be predominantly Chilean nationals with 25 local players to be named on the roster.
