Canada Women take second in Hamilton, New Zealand tops

Canada came close but for the third consecutive tournament it was New Zealand’s Women who were the best. The home side put the cap on an unbeaten weekend in convincing fashion, claiming the Hamilton Sevens with a 24-7 Cup Final performance. Settling for 5th place was the USA, while Brazil were 12th for the third time in four events.

The final round of the pool stage saw the Canadian narrowly getting past France, with Ghislaine Landry’s 3-for-3 conversion performance proving the difference. Landry would contribute 13 points in the Semi Final win over Australia. Britt Benn scored first in the final but a pair of Michaela Blyde tries in rapid succession turned the tide for New Zealand in the Final.

An Ellia Green hat trick propelled Australia over the USA in their last pool match. Under the new format it left the Eagles with only one match remaining. They would take their frustrations out on England, with a dominant seven-try performance including two each from Ilona Maher and Kristi Kirshe.

Las Yaras will enter the second half of the season with a lot of ground to make up on Ireland in the race to avoid losing core status. Tries by Thalia Costa and Mariana Nicolau weren’t enough against Russia to start the day. Bianca Silva scored a double in their last match but Megan Burns scored in stoppage time to win it for the Irish.

The results see Canada pushing just ahead of the USA into 3rd overall. Brazil remain in 11th, 8 points behind Ireland. The series continues in Sydney next weekend.
