Matt Hughston will be the first player to suit up for five different professional rugby teams in America when he takes the field in 2020. The popular flanker has departed Rugby United New York and has joined up with Old Glory DC for the new Major League Rugby campaign.
Having played for the Ohio Aviators during the 2016 PRO season, Hughston signed for NOLA Gold for the inaugural MLR season in 2018. He made the move to RUNY ahead of 2019, but captained the New England Free Jacks in their first ever match against the Arrows in Halifax before arriving in the Big Apple.
Hughston played in all 16 matches for RUNY last season, starting 10 as part of a competitive back row group. The 30-year-old now joins Old Glory who already have strength at loose forward with club captain Josh Brown joined by experienced new arrivals Travis Larsen, Mungo Mason, and Jamason Fa’anana-Schultz. All-American flankers Jack McLean and Nic Mirhashem are also on board.
A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Hughston represented the USA at the 2009 Junior World Trophy and has since earned selection to the USA Falcons Sevens side. He has also captained the USA South Panthers in Rugby Americas North competition.
