Heartbreaking Rugby Moments

The winning side in a rugby match takes the glory though in rugby there are also the heartbreaking moments. The moments live in the memory with many often seeming like they happened yesterday. Below are a sample of five very hard results for teams from the Americas.

 

1 – ARGENTINA VS FRANCE – RWC 2019
Argentina’s early exit at RWC 2019 was all but finalized after one match. The responsible moment came from France’s replacement fly half Camille Lopez who landed a drop-goal to put France a 23-21 lead in the 70th minute. Argentina would have a late hope as Emiiliano Boffelli attempted a highly difficult penalty from 48 meters on a wide angle in the 80th minute. The realty is Lopez’s strike was the heartbreak moment.

 

2 – ARGENTINA VS NEW ZEALAND – 2001
New Zealand overcame a 20-17 final minute scoreline to defeat Argentina in Buenos Aires in 2001. The heartbreaking defeat for Los Pumas came following a kick from Felipe Contepomi which failed to find touch. New Zealand countered with N8 Scott Robertson scoring the winning try at the death.

 

3 – CANADA VS JAPAN – RWC 2007
The pool match between Canada and Japan at RWC 2007 saw the Asians completing a draw in overtime. It came with a try in scored to take the scores to 12-10. Japanese inside center, Shotaro Onishi landed the conversion to end the match at 12-12.

 

4 – CANADA VS SCOTLAND – 2014
Playing in Toronto against Scotland in 2014, Canada had a chance at along off a victory. Trailing 19-17 with five minutes remaining Canada had go-forward ball in Scotland’s half. They were awarded a penalty only for referee Mike Fraser to call the action back to the TMO and red card Canadian Jebb Sinclair. Without the altered decision from the official the goal would have been kicked, thus Canada would have beaten Scotland.

 

5 – URUGUAY VS NAMIBIA – 2019
Uruguay fell to a 30-28 last-gasp defeat against Namibia in the 2019 Nations Cup. Namibia’s Cliven Loubser slotted the winning points with time up as the Africans erupted in celebrations at the Estadio Charrúa. Uruguay did not have a good match though they appeared to have secured the win only to give away a penalty and pay the ultimate price.
