Nicolás Freitas will play for Peñarol in the inaugural Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) season. The Uruguayan winger joins as a vital Teros back, and a player who was involved with Los Jaguares in the 2017 Super Rugby season.
The 26-year-old is firmly established as Uruguay’s starting left winger. He has 38 test caps to his name, four of them coming at RWC 2019 where he started against Fiji in Kamaishi; Georgia in Kumagaya; Australia in Oita; and Wales in Kumamoto.
In addition to the World Cup, Freitas also scored tries in Uruguay’s wins over the USA, and Russia. Yet what he brings to Los Teros is about far more than contributing as a finisher. Freitas is an excellent defender, and counter-ruck player too.
Freitas’ move to Peñarol follows that of Mateo Sanguinetti from the Houston SaberCats to the club. Indications are that the Peñarol will be highly competent. Among those joining the team are front-rowers Diego Arbelo, and Guillermo Pujadas; and the coup of a signing of Santiago Arata.
