Canadian international Robbie Povey touched down early in the second half for Northampton Wanderers in their Premiership Rugby Shield clash against Gloucester United on Monday. The Shield competition is for Premiership reserve-grade sides and typically features a mix of academy talent, trialists, and first team players in need of game time.
Povey was named on the bench as a loan player from Birmingham Moseley, where he is currently playing in England’s third division – National One. He will join up with the Utah Warriors of Major League Rugby early in the new year. The 23-year-old was previously part of Northampton’s junior academy program before stints at Bedford Athletic, Coventry, and Sale FC.
Coming on as a replacement for fullback Harry Mallinder at halftime, Povey cut through the line from a set piece move early in the second half. Also playing in the match for Wanderers was England World Cup center Piers Francis, with Portugal winger Caetano Branco named on the bench.
