Rosters confirmed for Cape Town Sevens

The World Sevens Series continues in Cape Town this weekend, the three-day event kicking off on Friday. It will be the second stop on the circuit for the men, and the third for the women. It’s the second of a record six combined events on this season’s schedule.

Live broadcasts will be available on the CBC Sports website in Canada, NBC Sports Gold in the USA, and ESPN in South America.

MEN

Dubai was unforgiving for the three Americas men’s teams. The controversial new finals day format left Argentina in 7th, the USA in 8th, and Canada in 10th spot at tournament’s end. All will have to make adjustments though their rosters will be nearly identical.

Argentina have lost playmaker Lautaro Bazán Vélez to injury with uncapped Pumitas flyhalf Gerónimo Prisciantelli called straight into the man squad as his replacement. Canada’s only change sees Theo Sauder promoted to the main squad with Josiah Morra designated the 13th man. There are no changes for the Eagles as Harley Wheeler again awaits his series debut having been an unused alternate in Dubai.

WOMEN

It was a very different story for the women’s teams last weekend. A late try from New Zealand denied Canada a famous Cup Final victory, while the USA were just behind in 3rd place. Brazil struggled in the pool stage but earned their first win of the new season in their only match on Day Two.

Las Yaras coach Reuben Samuel has named an identical squad for Cape Town, and it’s the same again for John Tait’s Canada side as well. Chris Brown has made one swap in his Women’s Eagles lineup with Kasey McCravey stepping into the main squad and Kayla Canett named as an alternate.
