Canada has suffered a blow on the eve of the Dubai Sevens as Adam Zaruba was been forced to withdraw with an undisclosed lower body injury. The giant winger will also miss the Cape Town event. David Richard moves up to the main 12-man squad for Dubai with Theo Sauder called up to take Zaruba’s roster spot.
It’s the first World Sevens event for Sauder, though he has previously turned out for the Maple Leafs development side. After initially missing out on World Cup selection, the mercurial utility back joined the team in Japan but did not make a tournament appearance. He now shifts his focus to sevens with Olympic selection on the horizon.
Zaruba joins a disabled list that includes Justin Douglas, Lucas Hammond, Andrew Coe, Admir Cejvanovic, and Cole Davis. With the addition of Sauder, the core sevens group now numbers 20 with Luke McCloskey missing out on selection for the opening leg of the new season.
