Uruguay’s best player from RWC 2019, Santiago Arata has signed for Peñarol. This sees the talented scrum-half continuing his professional rugby career in a different country. He moves from the Houston SaberCats (MLR) to play for Uruguay’s first professional rugby team, Peñarol in the new Súper Liga Americana.
Arata was a try-scorer in Uruguay’s famous RWC upset victory over Fiji in Kamaishi. It was part of a special performance wherein the 23-year-old proved himself as the leading player in his position from the Americas.
2020 will begin with Arata playing for Peñarol. From there he may remain or play elsewhere. He has been offered a contract from Top 14 side Castres.
Despite his young age, Arata has quickly amassed 39 caps for Uruguay. He was at the perfect age to begin his career as the Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) began ideally for him. After four years of the competition he is a household name in Americas Rugby.
