Dom Day confirms retirement, San Diego move off

Dominic Day will not be heading to San Diego after all. The former Wales and Saracens lock was announced by the Legion in July but has now confirmed his retirement with immediate effect, opting instead to focus on his family and and business interests. He is the co-founder of FourFive CBD along with England international George Kruis.

It’s the second such setback that the team has suffered in the off-season. Former England flanker Steffon Armitage was also due to join the team but a criminal conviction in France scuppered the move, with Armitage joining Biarritz instead.

The Legion will now look elsewhere but may choose not to sign another second row with Siaosi Mahoni, Louis Stanfill, Ben Mitchell, and Keni Nasoqeqe already under contract. A direct replacement if desired might be Joshua Furno. The Italy international played the last three weeks of the 2019 campaign in San Diego but is currently a free agent.
