Barbarians down Brazil in São Paulo

The Barbarians downed Brazil in São Paulo, winning 47-22 this evening. The match brings to an end Brazil’s international competition for the year. The Barbarians have one match remaining which will be on Saturday, November 30 against Wales in Cardiff.

In a match featuring eleven tries the locals and neutrals were all entertained. Pre-match Brazil had been targeting a 30-point defeat margin which they achieved.

Brazil came away with their image enhanced. With it their ambition of qualifying for RWC 2023 will be the subject of great planning.

Against the Barbarians Brazil scored first. Winger Daniel Lima juggled the ball before touching down for the opening score. It came from a kick and chase from Felipe Sancery who regathered himself before kicking again. Lima got the bounce and went over.

Fly half Josh Reeves converted Lima’s try and minutes later he landed a conversion. In between his two shots at goal was a try to Campese Ma’afu. The Barbarians’ opening points would be converted by Santiago González Iglesias to level the scoring.

González Iglesias was one of two Argentine players in the match. The second was Bautista Ezcurra who played the match on the right wing. He crossed for the Barbarians’ second try, doing so in combination with fullback David Havili.

The next try came from Havili himself. The New Zealander went over for two in the match.

With half-time approaching Brazil scored for the second time. Their try came from ‘Monstro’, second row Luiz Vieira. He went over following over 20 phases of raids near the try line. The score saw Brazil trailing 19-15 at half-time.

In the second half Havili scored again and Australian flanker Angus Cottrell notched a double. There was also a try to South African Jano Vermaak as well as a stunning left-footed conversion from Rory Best. For Brazil came a try to Felipe Cunha, one of the best of the evening.
