Sam Malcolm one of three to re-sign with Arrows

The Toronto Arrows have confirmed three more signatures for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. Starting flyhalf Sam Malcolm headlines the trio, with supporting cast members Shawn Windsor and Jack McRogers also re-upping for a second campaign with the 2019 Semi Finalists.

Malcolm’s return is welcome news to Arrows fans, who were saddened by the departure of prop Morgan Mitchell. One of the outstanding goal kickers in MLR, Malcolm showed great poise under pressure in 2019, starting 16 games and kicking the winning drop goal to beat New York in the final regular season game. The 24-year-old has been playing for Manawatu in New Zealand’s Mitre 10 Cup during the off-season.

With Malcolm and new signings Tayler Adams and Will Kelly already on board, Windsor is likely to find himself covering fullback more than his preferred flyhalf position. At 32 he remains a consistent and versatile contributor who played in eight games during the 2019 campaign, starting six.

McRogers joined the team mid-season and appeared in just two matches but the 21-year-old is highly rated having impressed for the Canada u20 side. It gives the Arrows three young players of interest to the national selectors at hooker with World Cup select Andrew Quattrin, 23, and age-grade international Steven Ng, 22, completing the triumvirate.

The Arrows are now up to 33 contracted players for the new season with only a few spots left to be filled on the roster. Their 2020 campaign kicks off on February 9 in Austin, Texas, with a neutral-venue contest against the Houston SaberCats in Las Vegas the following weekend. The first match in Toronto is scheduled for April 4 against the Utah Warriors.
