Spain to host World Rugby u20 Trophy in 2020

Spain have been named hosts of the World Rugby u20 Trophy for 2020. The second-tier age-grade competition will take place in Villajoyosa between September 14 and 27, with regional qualifying tournaments taking place throughout the year to determine final participants.

Brazil were hosts in 2019, an event that saw Japan emerge victorious over Portugal to earn promotion. The Baby Blossoms will take the place of Scotland in the u20 Championship, the latter relegated following the top-tier tournament held in Argentina.

As hosts, Spain will earn an automatic spot in the competition, the first time they will have participated since finishing 3rd in 2016, their only appearance to date. Regional representatives from North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania will make up the other six teams in the tournament.

Uruguay have been South American nominees in 9 of the 12 tournaments to date, and also hosted the event in 2017. The earned promotion to the Championship in 2008 but were immediately relegated the following year. North America has been restricted to only one team since 2015. Canada has earned that spot every year with the exception of 2016 when the USA finished 5th in Zimbabwe.
