The Utah Warriors now have three props signed up for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. South African loosehead Franco van den Berg joins tighthead Angus MacLellan as returnees from 2019, with new addition Kalolo Tuiloma adding his massive bulk to the right side of the scrum.
van den Berg, 23, proved a high quality signing in his first season with the Warriors. The Junior Springbok select played in all 16 games, starting all but one. His mobility in the loose was a key feature, the front rower resembling a midfielder at times with his line breaks and offloads.
Once-capped Eagles center Calvin Whiting has signed on for 2020. He had previously been announced as joining in 2019, but complications with his contract saw him instead sitting out the entire season. The former BYU star is expected to make an impact in the high-velocity Utah backline.
Also joining is 19-year-old Junior All-American captain Bailey Wilson. Born in Australia, he qualifies for the Eagles on residency and has previously trained with the Scotland u20s, for whom he qualifies on ancestry. The 6’4″ (1.93m) loose forward is highly rated, noted for both his physicality and athleticism.
