Morgan Mitchell signs for Kamaishi Seawaves

Morgan Mitchell will not be playing for the Toronto Arrows in 2020. The popular tighthead prop has inked a deal with the Kamaishi Seawaves in Japan’s second division, the Top Challenge League. He makes the move after being overlooked for a Super Rugby contract despite another strong Mitre 10 Cup campaign with the Southland Stags.

The 26-year-old New Zealander was an instant hit with the Arrows in 2019. His strong scrummaging and hard-charging style in the loose saw him ranked among the very best tightheads in MLR with only San Diego’s Paddy Ryan standing in the way of Dream Team selection. Mitchell started 13 games for the Arrows, appearing in all but one match during the season.

Toronto will instead look to new signing Richie Asiata – who plays both sides of the scrum – and returning Canada World Cup select Cole Keith at tighthead, with Mike Smith and Canada u20 arrival Tyler Rowland also in the picture. It’s unclear if goal-kicking flyhalf Sam Malcolm will return from Manawatu.
