Cape Town to host 2022 World Cup Sevens

World Rugby has confirmed that the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens will be hosted by South Africa. The 8th running of the tournament will take place in September of that year at the scenic Cape Town Stadium. Final dates for the three-day event are yet to be determined.

South Africa emerged as the top choice after a record 11 nations expressed interest in hosting the event. Three were from the Americas – Argentina, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands. The other applicants included France, Germany, India, Malaysia, Qatar, Scotland, and Tunisia.

As in 2018 there will be 24 men’s and 16 women’s teams in Cape Town. New Zealand were champions in both brackets last year when the tournament was held at San Francisco’s AT&T Park in July. The 2022 event will be held 6-8 weeks later in the year to accommodate the 2022 Commonwealth Games that will take place in Birmingham, England.
