Uruguay join World Rugby Council

Uruguay have joined the World Rugby Council. In doing so the Unión de Rugby del Uruguay becomes the 52nd member of rugby’s global decision-making entity.

Uruguay obtained World Rugby Council status following the earlier appointments this year of Fiji and Samoa. All did so after having achieved the required governance criteria.

On the field performances have also seen progress for Uruguay. At RWC 2019 Los Teros produced one of the great upsets by defeating Fiji in Kamaishi. Notably competitive performances against Australia, and Wales rounded-off a memorable RWC 2019 campaign for the South Americans.

Uruguay will begin the RWC 2019-2023 cycle at an all-time high. In addition to the off and on field progress there is also a greatly enhanced calendar which will see further breakthroughs with Los Teros able to have increased international competition against an increasing diversity of opponents.
