Houston SaberCats add Pumas Sevens cap Matías Freyre

The Houston SaberCats have bolstered their backline with the signing of Pumas Sevens cap Matías Freyre. USA-born but raised in Argentina, the 25-year-old arrives from Club Newman in Buenos Aires, most noted for producing the Contepomi twins – Felipe and Manuel – and Leicester Tigers great Marcos Ayerza.

Freyre has been a first choice player at Newman for the past four seasons in the URBA’s top division, recognized as the best amateur club competition in the Americas. He is equally comfortable playing in the midfield or at fullback. After representing Buenos Aires at age-grade level he earned selection to the World Sevens Series, making his debut at Singapore in 2018.

In joining MLR, Freyre becomes the third Argentine player in the league for the 2020 season. He follows the arrival of Tomás de la Vega to the Toronto Arrows from Buenos Aires, and JP Aguirre to New York from Austin. In addition, Eagles flyhalf Ben Cima was born in Argentina but raised in the USA. He plays for the Seattle Seawolves. Argentine-raised Maximo de Achaval has retired after playing for the Glendale Raptors.
