Austin sign Lindenwood pair White and de Waal

The Austin Herd have signed two loose forwards from the Lindenwood Lions. First Team All-American selects Wesley White and Michael de Waal will join the team for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. While the length of White’s contract has not been revealed, de Waal has confirmed a three-year deal.

Both players originate from South Africa. White hails from Cape Town and is the son of World Cup-winning coach Jake White. Primarily a No8 at Lindenwood, he has also played hooker for academy sides at the Sharks in Durban and Montauban of the French Pro D2. He is approaching his 25th birthday and will be eligible for the USA on residency in December.

de Waal, 24, is from Pretoria and played age-grade rugby for one of the country’s oldest clubs – Maties – and was part of the Blue Bulls academy system. Standing 6’3″ (1.90m), he can play across the back row but was most often used on the blindside flank by Lindenwood. Having arrived stateside in early 2017, he will complete his three-year residency requirements in 2020.
