Colombia’s Andrés Zafra Writes History in Top 14

Colombia’s Andrés Zafra Tarazonna scored a double for Agen in today’s home win over Stade Français. In doing so he wrote his name in history as the first player ever from Colombia to score a double in professional rugby.

The win moves Agen to 9th position in the Top 14 while for Stade Français the result keeps the club at the foot of the table. Eight rounds have been played thus far in the 2019-2020 season. Though there are two Sunday fixtures remaining this round.

It was not the first try for Zafra in the Top 14. Last December he scored the match winning try for Agen against Castres.

Now aged 23, Zafra has been in France since the age of 19. He left his native Cúcuta to join Givors in France’s 5th division, the Fédérale 3 in January 2016. From there he moved to Lyon and subsequently Agen.

Despite still be young for a professional rugby player he has already achieved more than anybody could have dreamt of from a Colombian player at the start of the current RWC cycle.

Zafra played u19 and u20 levels for Colombia in 2012 and 2013 and while still a teenager he made his debut for the senior test side, doing so in the 2014 South American B Championship. Zafra was named player of the tournament in Peru, a competition involving Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.

Colombia are the America Rugby Challenge (ARCh) champions. They won the Grand Slam in both the 2018 and 2019 editions of the tournament. Los Tucanes are now to play against the ARC wooden-spooners in a a promotion – relegation match on a yet to be confirmed date and location.
