Facundo Gattas Cited Following Red Card

Uruguayan hooker Facundo Gattas has been cited following his red card earlier today. The front-rower who plays for the Hindú club was sent off by referee Wayne Barnes (England) for foul play.

Barnes red carded Gattas for committing foul play contrary to Law 9.13 (dangerous tackle) in the 77th against Georgia. The incident did not have the force or malice that saw John Quill being suspended though it did breach the same laws.

Gattas made direct contact to the head with his shoulder in what was a no-arms tackle. He is now likely to join Quill in addition to the Samoan duo of hooker Motu Matu’u and center Rey Lee-Lo; and Australia winger Reece Hodge in being suspended.

The Uruguayan player is to attend a disciplinary hearing in Tokyo on Tuesday. He will do so in front of a panel consisting of chairman Jean-Noel Couraud (France); former Head Coach Frank Hadden (Scotland); and former referee Jose Luis Rolandi (Argentina).

In the event of a suspension Uruguay will not be permitted to replace Gattas with another player. Fortunately for Uruguay there is cover for starting hooker Germán Kessler on the roster in the form of Manuel Ardao, and Guillermo Pujadas.
