Ireland have been dealt an injury blow in the wake of their stunning loss to Japan at the Rugby World Cup. Ball carrying No8 Jack Conan has been sent home after suffering a broken foot in a training accident on Thursday. He came off the bench in Ireland’s opening win against Scotland.
Called up as a replacement is Ulster loose forward Jordi Murphy. The 28-year-old has 29 caps on his record and was part of Ireland’s training squad as recently as August. He was a starting flanker and scored a try in the win over New Zealand at Chicago in November 2016.
With the loss to the Brave Blossoms, Ireland will now have to regroup for their final pool matches against Russia and Samoa. They remain in contention to top Pool A but will need help from others as Japan have now taken pole position.
