Americas Rankings – September 29 2019

At the completion of the second weekend of RWC 2019 it is time to recalculate the Americas Rankings. The September 29 edition takes into account all matches from Monday September 23 to Sunday, September 29.

Uruguay ‘s historic 30-27 win over Fiji was the first of two matches for Los Teros this week. Tournament organizers handed the South Americans the unfavorable schedule of playing on Wednesday against Fiji, and Sunday against Georgia. The Americas Rankings have been updated to include both results. It sees a rise from 65.18 to 67.41 points and from 19th to 18th in the world. With it Uruguay go above Romania.

Canada’s RWC 2019 campaign did not start as planned. Considering past RWC matches between the countries the 48-7 defeated was a humbling result. Yet due to the gulf between the sides in the rankings there is no change in points or positions.

Also not losing points is the USA. The Eagles were outmatched by England, falling to a 45-7 defeat hours after Canada’s match. It was also the first game of the campaign for the USA. Fiji’s loss to Uruguay almost saw the USA moving above them into 12th spot. A win by Georgia over Fiji would see this change.

Winning this weekend was Argentina. Los Pumas completed a 28-12 win over Tonga in Osaka. The result sees Argentina rising by 1.82 points from 74.18 to 76.79. This represents a rankings improvement from 11th to 10th in the world.

Argentina had been temporarily up to 9th in the world only for Japan to then defeat Ireland to move to 8th. The shock win in Shizuoka sees Japan moving above Argentina, and Scotland. The RWC 2019 hosts face Scotland  in two weeks time in Yokohama.

Outside of RWC 2019 there was also a match between Bermuda and Gibraltar. The Americas vs European match was won 22-6 by Bermuda. The result saw no change to the rankings for Bermuda.
