Kurt Morath’s third Rugby World Cup is over. The former Utah Warriors flyhalf suffered a serious injury to larynx during the game against England on Sunday which may require surgery. He remains in hospital at Sapporo. Also ruled out of the tournament for Tonga is outside back Nafi Tu’itavake, who broke his arm on the last play of the game.
Called up as a replacement for Morath is the experienced Latiume Fosita. The 27-year-old Counties Manukau playmaker was a surprise absentee from the original 31-man squad. He will be attending his second World Cup having played three matches in 2015.
The second player has yet to be confirmed but is likely to be Tasman outside back Fetuli Paea according to Assistant Coach Pita Alatini. Paea was named in the squad for the Pacific Nations Cup but was forced to withdraw through injury. He has made four appearances for the Mako in the Mitre 10 Cup recently. This would be his first World Cup.
