Brazil has secured an additional home test match. Following the confirmation of Brazil’s home fixture against the Barbarians in São Paulo on November 20 a second match has now been added. Os Tupis will take-on Portugal in a match to precede that against the Barbarians. It will take place on November 09.
The CBRu is yet to confirm the venue for the test match. The date though is to clash with the final of the national league, the Super 13. This may mean a change to that fixture to prevent teams losing players for international duty.
Brazil and Portugal have met on three prior occasions. The Europeans have the better record with two wins and one loss. Brazil’s win came in the most recent match with Os Tupis completing a stunning upset to win 25-21 in São Paulo in 2017.
For both Brazil and Portugal the match is part of the initial phase of preparation for the RWC 2023 quarriers. Portugal are prior participants in the World Cup. In RWC 2007 they played against Italy, New Zealand, Romania, and Scotland.
Brazil are yet to qualify though every cycle that they have participated in has demonstrated progress from the prior cycle. The RWC 2015-2019 cycle saw Brazil overtaking Chile for the first time in history. With it Brazil are now 5th in the Americas and 3rd in South America.
