RWC 2019 has officially become the highest grossing Rugby World Cup. Three days out from the start of the competition the tournament has already surpassed all others.
Japan bid for RWC 2011 only to lose to New Zealand. At the time of the decision, in 2005, it was voted against to favor the established order. Japan would win for RWC 2019 against Italy and South Africa though there was still plenty of doubt about hosting the RWC away from the traditional bases of the UK, France, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa.
Approximately 400,000 tourists are expected in Japan for RWC 2019. Thus far over 97% of the tickets have been sold. The revenue from this equates to 245million Stirling which is 15million more than that from RWC 2015 in England and Wales.
This is welcome news for the global game. Among those set to benefit are the Americas. Argentina had been interested in bidding for RWC 2023 but decided against it after of time knowing that France would be bidding.
For RWC 2007 the bidding process is yet to begin. Argentina would be a prime candidate and it would be the time for a RWC to return to the Southern Hemisphere after RWCs 2015, 2019, and 2023 take place in England and Wales; Japan; and finally France.
From the Southern Hemisphere other interested parties would be Argentina’s rivalries in the Rugby Championship. Australia has hinted at being interested in hosting a second RWC on its own and a third overall. Meanwhile South Africa has bid for all RWCs from 2011-2023 only to never be the winning option.
In addition to the possibility of Argentina 2027 there is also both Canada, and the USA as future options. The pathway to make this happen is in place with the question being when would be a feasible time to host and how to do so. Both countries have the means of hosting alone and this happens to be World Rugby’s preferred means of staging a Rugby World Cup.
