Los Teros Head Coach Esteban Meneses has revealed Uruguay’s targets for the World Cup. The South Americans are the bottom seed in Pool D of RWC 2019. Their matches will be against Fiji, Georgia, Australia, and Wales.
In an interview with Ignacio Chans, Meneses stated that Uruguay’s targets for the World Cup are to be protagonists in both attack and defense. In terms of results, something which World Rugby focuses heavily on, Uruguay is seeking a win or a loss by under 15 against Fiji and Georgia; and losses by no more than 30 points against Wales, and Australia.
Uruguay’s World Cup will begin on day six of the tournament. This means that the South Americans will be the final team from Pool D to play a match. The pool will begin on Saturday, September 21 with Australia vs Fiji in Sapporo. Game two will be on Monday, September 23 with Georgia taking-on Wales in Toyota.
Fiji will have three rest days between their second match which will be Uruguay’s first. That game will be played in Kamaishi on Wednesday, September 25. While this may appear to give Uruguay an advantage the reality is that it will not due to Uruguay’s second match falling after three great days.
Uruguay will travel from Kamaishi to Kumagaya to face Georgia on Sunday, September 29. With these two matches being those targeted as winnable the means to the end has been extremely complicated by World Rugby’s match scheduling.
Game three for Uruguay will fall after five rest days. Los Teros will face Australia in Oita on Saturday, October 05. The final fixture will then be against Wales in Kumamoto on Sunday, October 13.
