RWC Rewind Argentina: González Amorosino vs Scotland in 2011

During the final weeks of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2019 to arrive Americas Rugby News will be taking a look back at some moments from past RWCs involving competitors from the Americas. In week four the feature team is Argentina.

In day five of the series the feature is a tournament defining moment from Argentina. Trailing Scotland by six points in wet and windy conditions in Wellington, New Zealand Los Pumas were virtually down and out. The match was in the 72nd minute with the Scots leading 12-6.

The conditions and time remaining did not favor Los Pumas and nor did injuries. Both Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe and Rodrigo Roncero had gone off injured. The bench, though, would have the hero as Lucas González Amorosino produced magic when it was needed most.

An excellent kick-off saw Argentina regathering the ball. From there Santiago Fernández, Nicolás Vergallo, Gonzalo Camacho, and Patricio Albacete each had one carry. The ball was then spun to Felipe Contepomi to Marcelo Bosch and Lucas González Amorosino.

Having received the pass from Bosch 25 meters out and five meters from the touch line Scotland had the replacement winger covered. Yet the magic feet of González Amorosino saw him slide past Chris Paterson before stepping off both feet to dance his way past Max Evans, Jim Hamilton, Graeme Morrison and John Barclay.

The magic would ultimately see Argentina on their way to the Quarter Finals of RWC 2011. The tournament saw Argentina playing against England in Dunedin; Romania in Invercargill; Scotland in Wellington; and Georgia in Palmerston North. Having gotten out of the pool the South Americans would go on to face New Zealand in Auckland.
