The San Diego Legion have added another new name for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. Former Australia u20 standout Luke Burton arrives after spending the past two seasons in France with Biarritz Olympique. He is the seventh new signing on the off-season for the Legion.
Burton played in two u20 Championships with Australia before earning a Super Rugby contract with the Western Force. In his second season he played in 16 matches but a persistent foot injury all but wiped out his third season and limited his fourth to just six games.
When the Force were dropped from Super Rugby, Burton opted to make the move to France where he would spend two seasons with Biarritz. A shoulder injury knocked him out of the second half of the 2018-19 season and he will now change pace again with the move to the North American league.
The 25-year-old is most often used at flyhalf but is equally adept at inside center or fullback. Burton’s attacking flair and strength in defense could also see Joe Pietersen shifted to fullback. While not a specialist goal kicker, Burton has a reliable right boot from hand and off the tee.
