RWC Rewind Argentina: Quesada’s Heroics vs Samoa in 1999

During the final weeks of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2019 to arrive Americas Rugby News will be taking a look back at some moments from past RWCs involving competitors from the Americas. In week four the feature team is Argentina.

In day two of the series the feature is Gonzalo Quesada’s heroics from the pool match against Samoa in 1999. The Argentine fly half would score 27 points in a 32-16 victory which saw an a amazing second half performance as Los Pumas came back from being 16-3 down at half time.

The match was the second of three pool games for Argentina at RWC 1999. The first was the tournament opener with Quesada also being a stand-out performer. He scored all 18 of Argentina’s points against Wales. In game three he would score 21 points against Japan to see Los Pumas reach the knock-out phase for the first time in RWC history.

With the win over Samoa being the first win of the tournament for Los Pumas it was nothing short of a crucial victory. Given what would transpire in RWC 1999 the comeback win would be crucial for Argentina with Quesada putting in one of the most underrated performances in RWC history.
