RWC Rewind USA: Lou Stanfill’s Double from RWC 2007

During the final weeks of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2019 to arrive Americas Rugby News will be taking a look back at some moments from past RWCs involving competitors from the Americas. In week three the feature team is the USA.

In day seven of the series the feature is Lou Stanfill’s try scoring double from RWC 2007. They tries came against Tonga, and Samoa respectively. Both saw him showing impressive strength to out muscle the Pacific Island defenders. On both occasions he ran into a wall and came away with tries.

The tries are a testament to the fact that so many of the USA’s tries at RWCs happen to have come from the set-piece. Some cases in point include Chris Wyles against Italy in RWC 2011; Chris Baumann against Samoa in 2015; and Titi Lamositele against Scotland in RWC 2015.

In RWC 2007 Stanfill was a starting flanker yet would move to N8 in the second half. His score against Tonga came from the back of the scrum. With the Eagles having been awarded a penalty, Stanfill took a quick tap and ran into three defenders. Two more would look to hold back the Californian yet he would score.

His second try was against Samoa in the USA’s next match of RWC 2007. It was also from an attacking scrum but this time it was from the base of the scrum itself. With the Eagles getting a slight push, Stanfill attacked, running towards powerhouse winger Alesana Tuilagi. He would be held up only for momentum to get him over.
