RWC Rewind USA: Wyles try vs Italy in 2011

During the final weeks of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2019 to arrive Americas Rugby News will be taking a look back at some moments from past RWCs involving competitors from the Americas. In week three the feature team is the USA.

In day six of the series the feature is Chris Wyles’ try against Italy in RWC 2011. The score was from a  set-piece lineout in which Todd Clever won the throw and quickly passed to Mike Petri who fed fly half Roland Suniula. The quick hands did not stop there as Suniula linked to a rampaging Paul Emerick who would break two tackles before passing to Wyles to finish it off.

The try would be the second of the match and would bring the scores level at 7-7 in the 18th minute of play. It was a match in which the USA did well in though the Southern Europeans would keep the Eagles scoreless in the second half to complete a 27-10 victory.

The match was played in Nelson, New Zealand. It would be the USA’s final match of the tournament. The Eagles began in New Plymouth where they would face both Ireland, and Russia while game three was against Australia in Wellington.

Wyles would play on three World Cups for the USA. In all three tournaments he would score tries and would also do so in the final pool match for the Eagles. His first try was against South Africa in RWC 2007 in Montpellier; try number two would be against Italy in Nelson; try three against Samoa in Brighton, UK; and his final RWC try was against Japan in Gloucester, UK.
