Billy Stewart re-signs with NOLA Gold

Billy Stewart has signed a new two-year deal with the NOLA Gold. The 25-year-old lock is the latest in a string of extensions in New Orleans, with 15 returning players now secured and three newcomers confirmed for the 2020 Major League Rugby season.

It was a breakthrough season for Stewart. The local product added more than 20lbs (10kg) to his 6’5″ (1.96m) frame following his debut year in 2018, and the extra bulk paid dividends in both the set piece and his ball carrying in traffic. He played a dozen games for NOLA in 2019, starting six and playing 47% of all possible minutes.

While not a first choice player this past season, he provided vital depth in the second row. Stewart’s rapid development through a season and a half of MLR has marked him as a player of potential. He recently represented the USA South Panthers in their win over the Cayman Islands.
