RWC Rewind USA: Petri Try vs Russia in 2011

During the final weeks of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2019 to arrive Americas Rugby News will be taking a look back at some moments from past RWCs involving competitors from the Americas. In week three the feature team is the USA.

In day five of the series the feature is the Mike Petri’s try against Russia in RWC 2011. The score would come early in the match and ultimately prove decisive in the Eagles completing the win in what had been dubbed the Cold War battle.

The fixture was the second pool match for the Eagles at RWC 2011. Like the first it was in the North Island city of New Plymouth. That match marked the 10th anniversary of 9/11. A fired-up Eagles side would deny Ireland a bonus point and the USA would bring the game to a close with Paul Emerick scoring.

Petri’s try against Russia was a team effort in which the Suniula brothers combined with Petri finishing it off. It came from a ruck on the halfway line. Captain Todd Clever passed from scrum half to Andrew Suniula who attracted defenders before off-loading to brother Roland Suniula who broke through to then return to Andrew Suniula who attracted the final defender to pass to Petri.
